Stonewall Peak, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

Warmth of the Sun | Stonewall Peak, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

I caught the last bit of light on Stonewall Peak.

This weekend I went out to Cuyamaca to hike up Stonewall Peak with a friend. I had been here once before in November but didn't come away with any shots that I liked so I was excited to revisit this spot. We decided to leave a early to give ourselves enough time to explore at the top. I couldn't remember how long the hike took but various guidebooks were suggesting anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours. We motored and it took us only 45 min from the trailhead to the peak marker (including a few minutes looking at a rattlesnake that was just off the trail). However I probably need to do more hikes and get in better shape as it was more tiring than I expected.

At the peak I did quite a bit of exploring and checking out different compositions. I finally decided to shoot from the rocks just before the staircase to the peak marker because that would give me the best view of the stand of white trees at the top. Personally, I think they are stunning although it's sad they are all dead.
