A few friends invited me out to photograph the milky way at Lake Cuyamaca. The lake is about 60 miles inland from San Diego which is far enough away that the impact of light pollution is minimized and you can see the milky way with the naked eye. If you've never experienced this, it is quite a site to behold.
This was my first time doing any sort of astrophotography and it was challenging from a technical perspective. With nothing but starlight to illuminate the scene I couldn't see anything through my viewfinder and I needed extremely long exposures to even record anything at all. Great fun. I predict I'll be doing more of this.
